Hungarian Apple Pie (Almás Pite)

Ingredients

For the Dough

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 200 g (7 oz) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

For the Apple Filling

  • 6–7 apples, peeled and grated
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 2 tbsp breadcrumbs

For Brushing

  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 tbsp milk

Instructions

  1. Mix the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt. Rub in the butter until crumbly.
  2. Add the egg and vanilla, then knead into a smooth dough. Divide into two equal portions and chill for 30 minutes.
  3. Cook the grated apples with sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice for about 10 minutes. Drain excess liquid and stir in the breadcrumbs.
  4. Roll out one piece of dough and place it in a greased baking pan.
  5. Spread the cooled apple filling evenly over the dough.
  6. Roll out the second piece of dough and place it on top. Seal the edges.
  7. Brush with the egg yolk mixed with milk.
  8. Bake at 180°C (350°F) for 35–40 minutes, until golden brown.
  9. Let cool completely before cutting into squares and serving.
