Hungarian Apple Pie (Almás Pite)
Ingredients
For the Dough
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 200 g (7 oz) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- ½ cup sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
For the Apple Filling
- 6–7 apples, peeled and grated
- ½ cup sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 2 tbsp breadcrumbs
For Brushing
Instructions
- Mix the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt. Rub in the butter until crumbly.
- Add the egg and vanilla, then knead into a smooth dough. Divide into two equal portions and chill for 30 minutes.
- Cook the grated apples with sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice for about 10 minutes. Drain excess liquid and stir in the breadcrumbs.
- Roll out one piece of dough and place it in a greased baking pan.
- Spread the cooled apple filling evenly over the dough.
- Roll out the second piece of dough and place it on top. Seal the edges.
- Brush with the egg yolk mixed with milk.
- Bake at 180°C (350°F) for 35–40 minutes, until golden brown.
- Let cool completely before cutting into squares and serving.
