Hungarian Stuffed Peppers (Töltött Paprika) Recipe
Ingredients
- 6 Hungarian wax peppers (or bell peppers)
- 500 g ground pork or beef
- 100 g uncooked rice
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp sweet Hungarian paprika
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
For the sauce:
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 2 tbsp flour
- 2 tbsp sweet Hungarian paprika
- 500 ml tomato sauce
- 500 ml beef or vegetable broth
- 1 tbsp sugar
Instructions
- Mix the ground meat, rice, onion, garlic, egg, paprika, salt, and pepper.
- Remove the tops and seeds from the peppers and fill them with the meat mixture.
- Heat the oil in a large pot, stir in the flour and paprika, then add the tomato sauce and broth. Mix until smooth.
- Add the stuffed peppers to the sauce and bring to a gentle simmer.
- Cover and cook for 50–60 minutes, until the peppers are tender and the rice is fully cooked.
- Stir in the sugar and adjust the seasoning.
- Serve hot with mashed potatoes or fresh bread.
