Hungarian Stuffed Cabbage Rolls (Töltött Káposzta)

Ingredients

  • 1 large head of cabbage (or 20–25 cabbage leaves)
  • 500 g ground pork
  • 200 g ground beef
  • 1 cup uncooked rice
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp Hungarian sweet paprika
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp dried marjoram
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 500 g sauerkraut
  • 2 cups tomato sauce
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 bay leaves
  • Sour cream, for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Boil the cabbage until the leaves soften, then carefully separate them.
  2. Mix the ground pork, ground beef, rice, onion, garlic, paprika, salt, pepper, and marjoram in a large bowl.
  3. Place a spoonful of filling onto each cabbage leaf and roll tightly, folding in the sides.
  4. Spread half of the sauerkraut in the bottom of a large pot.
  5. Arrange the cabbage rolls on top and cover with the remaining sauerkraut.
  6. Pour in the tomato sauce and beef broth, then add the bay leaves.
  7. Cover and simmer over low heat for 2 to 2½ hours, until the cabbage is tender and the meat is fully cooked.
  8. Serve hot with sour cream and fresh bread if desired.
