Hungarian Stuffed Cabbage Rolls (Töltött Káposzta)
Ingredients
- 1 large head of cabbage (or 20–25 cabbage leaves)
- 500 g ground pork
- 200 g ground beef
- 1 cup uncooked rice
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tbsp Hungarian sweet paprika
- 1 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp dried marjoram
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 500 g sauerkraut
- 2 cups tomato sauce
- 2 cups beef broth
- 2 bay leaves
- Sour cream, for serving (optional)
Instructions
- Boil the cabbage until the leaves soften, then carefully separate them.
- Mix the ground pork, ground beef, rice, onion, garlic, paprika, salt, pepper, and marjoram in a large bowl.
- Place a spoonful of filling onto each cabbage leaf and roll tightly, folding in the sides.
- Spread half of the sauerkraut in the bottom of a large pot.
- Arrange the cabbage rolls on top and cover with the remaining sauerkraut.
- Pour in the tomato sauce and beef broth, then add the bay leaves.
- Cover and simmer over low heat for 2 to 2½ hours, until the cabbage is tender and the meat is fully cooked.
- Serve hot with sour cream and fresh bread if desired.
