Hungarian Layered Honey Cake (Mézes Krémes)

Ingredients:

  • 500 g all-purpose flour
  • 150 g sugar
  • 100 g butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 2 tbsp milk

For the Cream:

  • 750 ml milk
  • 200 g butter
  • 150 g sugar
  • 80 g semolina
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

For the Chocolate Glaze:

  • 150 g dark chocolate
  • 50 g butter

Instructions:

  1. Heat the honey, butter, sugar, and milk until melted. Remove from heat, add baking soda, then mix in the eggs.
  2. Gradually add the flour and knead into a smooth dough.
  3. Divide into 5 equal pieces and roll each into a thin rectangle.
  4. Bake each layer at 180°C (350°F) for 6–8 minutes until lightly golden. Let cool.
  5. For the cream, boil the milk, whisk in the semolina, and cook until thick. Cool completely.
  6. Beat the butter with the sugar and vanilla, then mix with the cooled semolina cream.
  7. Spread the cream evenly between the cake layers.
  8. Melt the chocolate with the butter and pour over the top layer.
  9. Refrigerate for at least 8 hours (preferably overnight).
  10. Cut into rectangles and serve.
