Hungarian Layered Honey Cake (Mézes Krémes) – Recipe

Ingredients

For the dough:

  • 500 g all-purpose flour
  • 150 g powdered sugar
  • 100 g butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 3 tbsp honey
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 2 tbsp milk

For the cream:

  • 750 ml milk
  • 200 g butter
  • 150 g sugar
  • 80 g semolina
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

For the chocolate glaze:

  • 150 g dark chocolate
  • 50 g butter
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil

Instructions

  1. Mix the flour, powdered sugar, and baking soda.
  2. Add the butter, eggs, honey, and milk. Knead into a smooth dough.
  3. Divide into 6 equal pieces and roll each into a thin rectangle.
  4. Bake each layer at 180°C (350°F) for 6–8 minutes. Let cool.
  5. Heat the milk, stir in the semolina, and cook until thick. Cool completely.
  6. Beat the butter with the sugar until fluffy, then mix into the cooled semolina. Add the vanilla.
  7. Spread the cream evenly between the cake layers.
  8. Melt the chocolate with the butter and oil, then pour over the top layer.
  9. Refrigerate for 12–24 hours before slicing and serving.
