Hungarian Fried Langos (Traditional Hungarian Fried Flatbread)

Ingredients

  • 500 g all-purpose flour
  • 7 g instant dry yeast (or 25 g fresh yeast)
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1½ tsp salt
  • 300 ml warm milk
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • Oil for deep frying

Instructions

  1. Mix the warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and vegetable oil.
  3. Knead until smooth and elastic (about 8–10 minutes).
  4. Cover the dough and let it rise for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  5. Divide the dough into 6–8 equal pieces. Shape each into a ball and let rest for 15 minutes.
  6. Stretch each ball by hand into a thin round or oval, leaving the edges slightly thicker.
  7. Heat oil to 175°C (350°F). Fry each piece for 1–2 minutes per side until golden brown.
  8. Drain on paper towels and serve warm.

Traditional Toppings (Optional):

  • Sour cream
  • Grated cheese
  • Ham or smoked sausage
