Hungarian Jam-Filled Cookies (Lekváros Papucs)
📝 Description
These delicious Hungarian pastries, often called Lekváros Papucs (which means “jam slippers”), are soft, buttery cookies filled with sweet fruit jam—typically apricot. They are lightly dusted with powdered sugar and are perfect for tea time or holidays.
🧾 Ingredients
For the dough:
- 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
- 200g (7 oz) butter, softened
- 200g (7 oz) cream cheese
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- A pinch of salt
For the filling:
- 1/2 cup thick apricot jam (or any jam you like)
For topping:
- Powdered sugar (for dusting)
👨🍳 Instructions
-
Prepare the dough
In a bowl, mix butter and cream cheese until smooth. Add sugar, vanilla, and salt. Gradually mix in flour until a soft dough forms. -
Chill the dough
Wrap the dough and refrigerate for at least 1 hour. This makes it easier to roll. -
Roll and cut
Roll the dough on a floured surface to about 3 mm thickness. Cut into small squares (about 5x5 cm). -
Add filling
Place a small spoon of jam in the center of each square. -
Shape cookies
Fold opposite corners toward the center (or fold into triangles), slightly pressing to seal. -
Bake
Place on a lined baking tray and bake at 180°C (350°F) for 15–20 minutes, until lightly golden. -
Finish
Let them cool slightly, then dust generously with powdered sugar.
💡 Tips
- Use thick jam so it doesn’t leak while baking.
- Apricot is traditional, but plum or strawberry works great too.
- These cookies taste even better the next day!
